It is understandable that the available nursing interventions that may be effected may serve to increase the suffering of the patient without causing an outcome for improvement. The other form of challenge that nurses experience could be the stress caused by the ignorance of the family of the patient and the patients about the available treatment options that can be exploited in a given scenario. They do not know the clinical prognosis of the treatment option that is available and the family of the patient do not stop at establishing whether the voice of the patient is taken care of in most situations (Tully, 2014). The family members of the patient often press on the administration of treatments without the knowledge of the resulting repercussions of the said treatment to the patient. They also criticize and influence the decision that is made by the patient on the appropriate treatment to be administered. The indulgence of the external parties in matters of the patient’s medication or treatment stresses-up nurses and other medics too (Tully, 2014). The stress often comes up when they are forced to administer treatments based on past successful occasion on a patient with a different diagnosis. The problem also comes in after the controversial treatment is effected, and the effects appear to be detrimental to the patient. The latter scenarios are often characterized by fierce criticism of the nurse who participated in administering the treatment. The professionalism of the participating nurse is usually questioned and in some cases the nurse can even end up in a court of law. Such cases are major instances that causes mental stress and shapes the origins or forms in which the said ethical challenges arise in the course of provision of healthcare services. The health providers including private clinics, public hospitals and other health institutions have their rules that they often regard as ethical. The health providers often strive to push for actions that serve their best interests in the  industry of health service. The most prominent organisation that have strict rules are the private entities. The issue of conflict here is usually the payment modalities. It is known that the economic capabilities of patients differ and the methods of making medical payments cannot be the same for all the patients. The rules of the medical institutions provide that payments should be made promptly to the institution for any service that is provided to the patient. Some patients ofte n have no ready cash owing to their economic circumstances and the high cost of medical healthcare. Organisation often insists that payments are to be made immediately before the commencement of treatment even in conditions where the patient is in critical conditions (Ulrich, 2010). The nurses are the intermediaries between the management and the patients. Therefore, they are the people entitled to further or to carry out the interest of the organisation. They often face the challenge of serving the organisation or providing services to the patient to save a life. The challenge exists in trying to strike a balance between being loyal to the employer and saving the life of an innocent patient in a critical condition. Seeing an innocent and helpless patient die in the event of serving the interest of the employer could be so stressful in real life. As much as money is needed to take care of the medical expenses of the medical provider, the interest of the patient of lower economic status must also be regarded to ensure that the nurses do not suffer from the challenge of divided interest (Ulrich, 2010). The complications are witnessed in the structure of the organisation and in the communication channels that are used in the medical institution (Seedhouse, 2013). The structure of the leadership in a medical institution and the mode of communication can serve to frustrate the nurses in the workplace. Several nurses report difficulties in communication and instances of workplace bullying. The elements mentioned are part of serious work environment ethical concerns in the contemporary society. The present hierarchy of work structure in the management is designed in a manner that does not encourage communication among workers. Most organisation exhibit tall leadership structures. Tall leadership structures contribute to the  discouraging of vertical communication among the workers in a medical institution. The increase in the number of patients causes the necessity for an increase in the numbers of nurses who can promptly attend to the patients. Their bosses exert much pressure on them to deliver as per the job description that they signed. The process of striking a balance in attending to many patients is quite stressful and can cause them to deliver poor services to the patients. The nurses are, therefore, forced to dodge certain duties that are assigned to them in genuine terms. Some of the nurses suffer emotional disturbance in instances where they genuinely neglect a duty due to the fact that they were held up in delivering services to the other patients. Understaffing, therefore, causes stress to the nurses through the creating of a hectic working environment that is over-demanding to the nurses (Maynard, 2011). Prioritization of the Patients’ Needs The patients in the health care institutions do not only have health  problems, but they also have emotional disorders. The emotional needs of the patients also deserve to be addressed promptly as they also affect the healing process of the patients. The nurses are individuals specialized in the provision of Medicare services to the patients. They are not adequately trained to address the emotional needs of the patients. At times, situations that demand the addressing of an emotional condition of the patient arises and this calls for the attention of the nurses. Being that the nurses are not well trained in the field and that they have other health duties to attend to, they are often faced with the challenge of taking up the duty to provide emotional support to the respective patient (Mark, 2012). If they decide to avoid attending to the emotional duty, they may feel that they are not doing any good to the patients who do not receive optimal healthcare. They also feel that the family of the patient may give a negative feedback on their performances in the occasion that they did not get full support. Their attention is divided in prioritizing the nature of the duty to indulge in when such cases arise. The event can cause emotional distress and mental stress to the nurses, hence leading to the causation of other opportunistic ethical nursing problems. Advanced Technology in Healthcare Provision Technology used in the delivery of healthcare services are becoming more complicated with time. Almost all the tasks in the health institution are performed with the aid of a machine (Maynard, 2011). The nurses are, therefore, placed in a condition where they have no other easy alternative, but to learn how to use the technology. The patients under treatment at times could be more knowledgeable on the respective technologies that the nurse. The resulting situation can possible cause a challenge to the nurse as he will not be comfortable in the process of using the technology on such a patient. The nurses are, therefore, entitled to keep updating themselves on the new technology that is used in the field of healthcare provision. The process of maintaining a regular update on the use of the current technology could cause much stress to the nurses (Ulrich et al., 2010). Nurses are stressed when they cannot balance between learning new tricks at work and providing healthcare services eff ectively. Recommendation for Reduction of Stress The elements that cause stress to the nurses in the health organisations deserve to be addressed promptly. It is because stress as an ethical issue causes impacts that stretch to very many fields and varied stakeholders at play. Stress affects the delivery of the nurses in the health sector. The section provides remedies that should be considered in ensuring that the aspects that cause stress in the workplace are negated. The recommendation will also guide in the proper management of the stress whenever it is contracted by the nurses. Essay on Cheating and Plagiarism :: Exploratory Essays Research Papers

From the information I gathered for this paper, plagiarism is a bigger problem than we all think.   As far as I can tell plagiarism has been around since the existence of reading and writing.   Our human race sure hasn't helped this matter by inventing the printing press in the late fifteen-century and the Internet in the late twentieth century.   Plagiarism gets most of its press in the realm of education, particularly in places of higher education.   Aside from the information I attained threw traditional research, I poled a few students here at Lake Superior State University.   I got this idea from some of the articles I read.   I read this one article that was about a professor that said she estimated that 17% of the papers students turned in to her were plagiarized.   Those were the ones that she was actually sure about.   So when I did my pole I asked students if they had plagiarized a paper this semester.   The overwhelming response was...I plagi arize all my papers.   A whopping 100% of  Ã‚   the students I talked to plagiarized this semester and as far as I can tell, every semester.   No, this was not a scientific study, but it sure was shocking.   It is my guess that some of these people are ignorant, but a majority of them are lazy.   In the rest of my paper I will explain plagiarism in its many forms, discuss how the Internet has affected academic integrity, and highlight some of the ways teachers and professors are detecting and combating this problem known as plagiarism.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   What is plagiarism?   Plagiarism's definition cannot be explained in a few words or even one or two sentences.   Plagiarism takes shape in most cases, one of six ways or in a combination of the six.   Here they are: 1.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Using another writer's words without proper citation.   If you use another writer's work, you must place quotation marks around the quoted material and include a footnote or other indication of the source of the quotation.1[1] 2.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Using another writer's ideas without proper citation.   When you use another's ideas, you must indicate with footnotes or other means of where this information can be found.   Your instructors want to know which ideas and judgments are yours and which you arrived at by consulting other sources. Finlands Education System Essay

â€Å"The Finland Phenomenon† a name given to Finland’s admired education system. It is listed as the most surprising school system in the world. Its success is intently watched by other countries. The assigned video â€Å"Finland’s Education Success† was documented by Tom Burridge of BBC World News America on April 6, 2010. Week four Reading Journal for English 101 was a writing assignment asking students if the system could be implemented in the United States. â€Å"Finland’s schools score consistently at the top of the world rankings yet the pupils have the fewest number of class hours in the developed world. The proof is in the results and Finland has an education system other countries should learn from and envy. The transformation of Finland’s education system began 40 years ago as a key component to an economic recovery plan. The educators had no idea it was so successful until the year 2000, when a standardized test was given to fifteen years old students. The results revealed the scores. The Finnish youth came out on top as the best readers in the world. Three years later the youth led the scores in math as well. â€Å"By 2006 Finland was first out of 57 countries. The Finnish answer to standardized testing has been to only give exams to small groups of students and to trust in teachers. In 1991 the National Board of Education closed its inspectorate. â€Å"Teachers in Finland design their own courses using a national curriculum as a guide and spend about eighty percent as much time leading classes as their U. S. counterparts do. † Finnish teachers have sufficient opportunity to plan lessons and collaborate with colleagues. â€Å"Teachers in Finland spend fewer hours at school and less time in the classroom than American teachers. In 1979 reformers decided that every teacher in Finland earn a fifth-year master’s degree in theory and practice at one of the eight state universities. From that time forward teachers were granted equal status with doctors and lawyers. Teaching programs were flooded with applicants not because the salaries were that high, but because respect made the job so attractive. Pasi Sahlberg a former physics teacher points out â€Å"We prepare children to learn how to learn and not how to take a test†. All children- clever or less so- were to be taught in the same classrooms, with lots of special teacher help available to make sure no child would be left behind. † Compulsory school in Finland doesn’t begin until children reach the age of seven. â€Å"Children learn better when they are ready. Why stress them out? † Finnish culture values childhood independence children get themselves to school by either walking or biking. Upon arrival at school, children remove their shoes to maintain a relaxed atmosphere. Finnish children spend far more time playing outside even in the depth of winter. The children can’t learn if they don’t play. The children must play† The Finnish children are provided with seventy-five minutes of recess a day compared to the average of twenty-seven for U. S children. Finnish schools don’t assign homework because it is assumed the task is mastered in the classroom. Children are also mandated to take lots of arts and crafts and learning by doing. This is a far cry from the U. S concentration on testing in reading and math since the enactment of No Child Left Behind in 2002. The focus in Finland is on the individual child. If a child is falling behind, the highly trained staff recognizes and addresses the issues to meet the child’s needs. Nearly thirty percent of the children in Finland receive some kind of special help during their first nine years in school. The true focus on education is â€Å"equal opportunity for all. † Finnish educators have a hard time understanding the United States’ fascination with standardized tests. â€Å"Americans like all these bars and graphs and colored charts. † ‘It’s nonsense. We know far more about the children than these tests can tell us. Finland has a culture of collaboration between schools, not competition. All schools perform at the same level and there is no status in attending a particular facility. Finland has no private schools and all Finland’s schools are publicly funded. It is surprising to know that Finland spends about thirty percent less per student to achieve their far superior educational outcomes. The people in the government agencies running the schools from the national officials to the local officials are educators, not business people, military leaders or career politicians. The United States has muddled along in the middle of the pack for the past decade. Government officials have attempted to introduce competition into public schools. President Obama’s Race to the Top initiative invites states to compete for federal dollars using tests and other methods to measure teachers, a philosophy that goes against everything the Finnish schools stand for. â€Å"If you only measure the statistics, you miss the human aspect. † Fortunately United States Federal policies continue to move away from the rigid certainties of the No Child Left Behind legislation. The law has set an unrealistic target for one hundred percent student proficiency in every school by 2014. I couldn’t agree more with the Finland approach to education. In order for the United States to come close to Finland’s success a major change would need to occur. A change I believe would take decades to complete. â€Å"The Finns have made it clear, that in any country, no matter its size or composition, there is much wisdom to minimizing testing and instead investing in broader curricula, smaller classes, and better training, pay and treatment of teachers. The United States should take heed. †

Jonathan Edwards Essay

Jonathan Edwards uses an effective method called the â€Å"fire and brimstone† approach, which basically used scare tactics to keep people from straying away from the church. Jonathan Edwards was a master at using literary devices, which horrified but intrigued his audience. He (Edwards) wrote in second person to make each individual feel responsible for their own sins, this strategy allowed Edwards to speak to large groups. Edwards also used extended metaphors to help his audience realize the full extent of their sins. An example of this imagery is, â€Å" The wrath of God is like great waters that are dammed for the present; they increase more and more, and rise higher and higher till an outlet is given; and the longer the stream is stopped, the more rapid and mighty the course, when once it is let loose.† (Sinners 1). This metaphor shows the extent that Edwards goes to show parishioners of what God is capable of doing to the Human race if they do not seek salvation. Edwards uses bandwagon appeal to keep people from leaving the church. He believed that if he could convince enough people that the church is the only way to receive the â€Å"grace of god† that it would lead to a mass movement; if enough people went that the rest would follow in their footsteps. Edwards tries to persuade people to return to church by stating that those who attend are happy, â€Å"To see so many others feasting, while you are pinning and perishing! To see so many rejoicing and singing for joy of heart, while you have cause to mourn for sorrow of heart, and howl for vexation of spirit!† (Sinners 1). This method proved to be effective because people returned to the church, they feared for the outcome of their life and sought forgiveness just as their neighbors did. Jonathan Edwards’s beliefs and ideas began to affect people’s everyday lives and restore the church to its former glory. Jonathan Edwards believes that it is man’s duty to serve God in all aspects. He expresses his view that every man has the will to decide what is right from wrong, good from evil and what God would expect from a devout believer in his book Freedom of the Will. This book essentially breaks down what man desires and the choices man can make, he exposes how all these actions are relevant to the after life. Edwards tries to show that earthly matters will not a provide eternal happiness and that a man’s life on Earth is a time to prove his worthiness for judgment day by proclaiming â€Å"†¦but look at other things, as the good state of your bodily constitution, your care of your own life, and the means you use for your own preservation. But indeed these things are nothing† (sinners 1). Jonathan Edwards is known for his vivid depictions of what God’s wrath would be like. This dark imagery gave the public an idea of what their eternal punishment would be like if they did not conform to the holy life of the church. The imagery horrified people because it made people believe that God could damn each and every person to Hell for their sins. An example of the dark imagery is â€Å"The bow of God’s wrath is bent, and the arrow made ready on the string, and justice bends the arrow at your heart, and strains the bow, and it is nothing but the mere pleasure of God, and that of an angry God, without any promise or obligation at all, that keeps the arrow one moment from being made drunk with your blood†. (Sinners 1). By saying this Edwards strikes fear into the listener. Edwards often uses repetition to emphasize his condemnation on society for their lack of faith in the church. For example â€Å"You hang by a slender thread, with the flames of divine wrath flashing about it, and ready every moment to singe it, and burn it asunder; and you have no interest in any Mediator, and nothing to lay hold of to save yourself, nothing to keep off the flames of wrath, nothing of your own, nothing that you ever have done, nothing that you can do, to induce God to spare you one moment† (sinners 1). He stresses the word â€Å"nothing† to show that all are helpless and to further belittle each individual. Edwards also repeats the word â€Å" you† to make each person feel responsible for their actions and to single out each individual. Edwards also ensures that each line in his sermons are threatening to create a sense of an ultimatum; conform to the church or burn in Hell for all eternity. â€Å"Your wickedness makes you as it were heavy as lead, and to tend downwards with great weight and pressure towards hell; and if God should let you go, you would immediately sink and swiftly descend and plunge into the bottomless gulf, and your healthy constitution, and your own care and prudence, and best contrivance, and all your righteousness, would have no more influence to uphold you and keep you out of hell, than a spider’s web would have to stop a falling rock† (sinners 1). This quote shows how Edwards creates a sense of hope for the parishioners but when further analyzed it has a very negative and damning connotation. Edwards tries to portray his belief that God only lets you live because it pleasures him. This provides false hope but in reality he is saying that there is no way for anyone to be saved.

How to Get Into Film School, by a USC Alum SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips If you're interested in going into the entertainment industry in any capacity, be it directing, writing, producing, animation, editing, or otherwise, youshould consider attending film school.I wrote this article to share my knowledge as a USC film school alum and to help you get accepted to film school as well! My Film Background and Experience I graduated from the film school that wasvoted the #1 US film school for the sixth year in a row by The Hollywood Reporter:University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts.My major was Film Television Production (a program with a 3% admission rate). In addition to being accepted into a top US film school, I received a full-tuition merit scholarship to USC. During my senior year, I was asked to serve as the student representative in scholarship interviews for the film school, so I have experience reading and analyzing applications with other representatives of USC's School of Cinematic Arts.I was able to identify the qualities of a good and bad application and will share those with you below. What Do You Need to Apply to Film School? Each film school has its own application process. To find the application requirements for the film school you're applying to, simply search for "[College Name] film program application requirements" on Google.Here's an example: The conservatory style schools (e.g., AFI) only require one application, while film schools based at four-year universities (e.g., USC and NYU) typically require two applications: the application to the overall university (usually the Common Application) and the supplementary application to the film school. I won’t get into the nitty-gritty of how to write the best general application (for more on that, check out our guide tobuilding aversatile college application).This application is still important, though, because you won't be admitted to a college's film program if your test scores, transcript, letters of recommendation, and other materials are not impressive enough. Instead, I'll be talking about the supplementary application specifically (the only application for conservatory schools),and I'll be using USC’s as my example as I’m sure many of you who are reading this will be applying there. Even if you aren’t applying to USC, its application is pretty much the standard film school application. For USC’s film application, you'll need the following materials: Cinematic Arts Personal Statement Writing Sample (A or B or C) Visual Sample (Video or Photo Option) Creative Portfolio List Letters of Recommendation (3)* *These can be the same ones submitted for the Common Application and are no different from letters of recommendation for any college application. I'll go into detail for each of the components below (excluding the letters of recommendation since these are just your typical letters). #1: Cinematic Arts Personal Statement One part of the USC film school application is the personal statement. Here is how USC describes this component (all bold emphasis mine): The personal statement will be read by the Film Television Production Admission Committee as a measure of creativity, self-awareness and vision. We are looking for a sense of you as a unique individual and how your distinctive experiences, characteristics, background, values and/or views of the world have shaped who you are and what you want to say as a creative filmmaker. We want to know about the kind of stories you want to tell. Bear in mind that enthusiasm for watching films, descriptions of your favorite films and the involvement in the filmmaking process is common in most candidates. As a result, we encourage that you focus on your individuality. Note that there is no standard format or correct answer. (1,000 words or less) What should you write? In layman’s terms, your personal statement should be an essay of no more than 1,000 words that captures your individuality and your passion for film.I think USC gives very helpful hints to what makes a great (or terrible) personal statement. All film school applicants enjoy watching movies and have their favorites (if you didn't, why would you want to go to film school?), so you don’t want your personal statement to be all about that (otherwise, you'll seem unoriginal). Think about it: what distinguishes you from all those other candidates? Your individuality, who you are.What USC wants to see in your personal statement isthat you're an interesting, talented person they should add to their class. USC film school doesn't want average; it wants an engaging storyteller with unique tales to share. Does USC want you to tell them what a great storyteller you are?No.USC, as well as other film schools, want you to showthem what a great storyteller you are. To do this, you must tella story. Let me demonstrate.Here is the introduction to my personal statement from my actual USC film application: Cheerleader. A word that makes me want to hurl and is too often used to describe yours truly. I guess a bubbly, outgoing personality and attractive physique means you are a cheerleader. I sit excitedly waiting to hear my name. It’s 2006. I’m 14, and I’ve made it all the way to the Florida State Science Fair for my experiment on determining whether bacteria or fungi is more effective in cleaning up oil spills (BP could have used my help). I finally hear my name called and eagerly rush up to meet one of the judges to discuss my project. I spot him and am about to introduce myself. Before I can get a word out, he stops me, saying, "Let me guess, you’re a cheerleader." Let me clear the air now I am not now nor have I ever been a cheerleader. Firstly, I lack the acrobatic prowess required for such a role. Secondly, I hate the label. I correct the judge, to his embarrassment. We continue on to have an intelligent discussion about bioremediation, and I end up pla cing third in the state and winning an award from NASA. I'm a huge fan of complex characters. It's too easy to jump to conclusions. "A vivacious personality, a flair for style, a good-looking appearance, she clearly has no intelligence to speak of." I want to tell stories with surprises and characters that break the rules like Martin and John Michael McDonagh. In this introduction, I've told you a story about me from my past that reveals who I am, and I analyze it to show you what kind of storyteller I want to be.I know this is no easy task, but I'll try to help you brainstorm your personal statement story. Is there a moment in your life you're particularly proud (or even ashamed) of? For example, did you help someone? Win an award? Overcome a challenge? Make a big mistake? These are all great types of stories that illustrate your character and your potential to tell a story. If you're starting to put pen to paper, here are two topics to avoid: Sports victories and/or challenges:Unless you have a very rare event to discuss, don’t do it (e.g., you tore your ACL while scoring the winning goal in the state championship). Think about how many students across the country play a sport at their high schools. These are the most common stories admissions officers read, and they hate them. (This is an example of a topic that would make you seemunoriginal.) Religious experiences (such as camp stories, mission trips, etc.):Again, there might be an exception to this, but if you're talking about a religious awakening, it's an experience many people have had. Also, it might make the admissions officer feel uncomfortable. Admissions officers want to see what is special about you,so don’t tell a story that will group you in with most other applicants.Simple experiences/stories are often best. I wrote another personal statement (for my other applications) about giving money to a homeless man. After I walked away, the homeless man followed me down the street. I tried to get away from him, thinking he was trying to harass me. Finally, he caught up with me and asked for my name. I hesitated but told him it. He then shouted, "God bless, Lauren!" He had followed me to thank me and shake my hand. I was horribly ashamed that I’d thought the worst of him. Do not think that your story needs to be about saving the world. #2: Writing Sample for Film School The writing sample provides you with another opportunity to reveal what kind of storyteller you’d like to be. According to USC, your writing sample can be one of three options: A dialogue scene between two people. Provide a one-paragraph introduction describing the two characters in screenplay format. (no more than three pages) A description of a four-minute film that contains no dialogue. It can be fiction or non-fiction. The story has to be communicated visually. (no more than two pages) Describe a concept for a feature-length movie, fiction or documentary, which you would like to develop. (no more than two pages) I recommend option 2 or 3. You can attempt option 1 if you want, but I think it's the most difficult of the three to write well. I chose option 3, which I believe is the easiest option.Only submit option 2 if you feel very confident about your dialogue (i.e., that it sounds realistic and not cheesy) and scene structure (i.e., that it has a clear beginning, middle, and end). Regardless of the option you choose, you need to show a side of yourself that is different from what you show in your personal statement.For example, if your personal statement discusses how you watchedJurassic Park in the hospital with your grandmother and how passionate you are about Spielberg, it's best not to write a dialogue scene between a boy and his new alien friend (for the youngins who might not get this reference, in Spielberg’s E.T. a boy befriends an alien). In other words, you need to prove that you don't just want to become a Spielberg copy. The key here is to exhibit diversity and openness in your application(particularly in your personal statement, writing sample, and video sample). USC doesn’t want fully formed artists who will only make documentaries about one topic and who refuse to tell any other stories; rather, USC wants students who will learn from others and can be shaped into effective storytellers. In my personal statement, I discussed wanting to become a filmmaker like Martin and John Michael McDonagh (Martin is probably the better known of the two for his movies In Bruges, starring Colin Farrell, andSeven Psychopaths,alsofeaturing Farrell). Then, for my writing sample, I wrote a concept for a feature-length film set in WWII and centering on a husband and wife.This feature idea isn't just a regurgitation of my love of the McDonaghs- instead, it shows a completely different side ofme. Here are the requirements for this application component at USC: Please submit one of the two visual samples. It is essential that you specify what role(s) you have played in your visual sample. Video Option: Create a brief narrative video in which you had a major creative role. The video can be either live-action or animation, fiction or documentary, but it should reflect your aesthetic tastes and intellectual and emotional interests. (No longer than five minutes.) Please submit only ONE video. Multiple submissions WILL NOT be reviewed. Photo Option: Prepare a series of eight photographs you have taken which, when viewed in a specific sequence, portray a unique and original character or which tell a simple narrative story. Also, include a one-page narrative about the character being portrayed in the photos. The images may either be black-and-white or in color. Please upload the photos in order of sequence (1-8). Please upload the required one page narrative into the online application. Basically,you're required to submit one visual sample, which can be either a video or series of photographs. Here's my strong recommendation:do not choose the photo option (unless you're applying for a photography degree program). I repeat: do not do the photo option.I have never met a person accepted to film school that chose this option. By contrast, I have met people who applied with the photo option and did not get in. So don’t do it! While I don't know why the photo option doesn't seem to work well for admission, I have a couple of theories. You're applying to film school to be a storyteller. In your application, film schools want to see the types of stories you want to tell. From just eight photographs, though, it's difficult to tell a complete story (and one that fits into a film genre like comedy). Simply put, telling a narrative or portraying a unique character is extremely difficult to do through photos. By opting for the photo option, you essentially disadvantage yourself since other applicants can tell a full story (and really reveal their storytelling skills) in a five-minute video. If you care at all about getting into film school, you'll take the time to throw avideo together. As with the writing sample, the video sample should capture a differentside of you or genre of storytelling that interests you.USC also lets you submit a video you had a major role in (e.g., you wrote, directed, edited, or produced it). Note that I'd only submit something you didn't write or direct if you have no interest in being a writer or director (and mention in your personal statement that you want to be an editor/DP/production designer/etc.). USC wants to see your storytelling style, and if you didn't have a major role in the work (as a writer or director), it might be hard to see your influence on the final product.I didn't have a video to submit for film school, so I wrote and directed something. My friends acted in it, and a friend with a camera filmed and edited it. It doesn’t look like a feature film, but it tells a cute, unique story.Here it is for your viewing pleasure: Star-Crossed Trekkies Password: SCA20 Objectively, it's amateurish, but I managed to tell a sweet story that demonstrated my interest in comedy.While I wrote about the McDonagh brothers in my personal statement and composed a WWII period piece for my writing sample, my video sample- a comedy about trekkies trying online dating- was completely different. The bottom line? Show an interest in multiple aspects of storytelling in your application! #4: Creative Portfolio List for Film School The final piece of your application to film school is the creative portfolio list. Below ishow USC describes this application component: The portfolio list is a written record of the applicant's creative materials. It should include a concise description of each project, the month and year the project was completed, the applicant's creative role and the purpose of the project. The material, which does not need to be film- or television-related, should give an idea of the range and depth of the applicant's creative ability. Formal recognition- such as awards, publications, jobs and exhibitions- should be noted. The name of the institution or publication should be included when listing creative materials prepared for a class or publication. Basically, you're creatingan artistic resume.USC offers examples of what kinds of projects an applicant might include in her list as well as how it should be formatted: July 2008, A Day in the Life, digital video, 12 minutes. Position: writer/director. A documentary on a homeless Iraq vet who has lived on the streets since his return from the military. Created for senior-year multimedia term project, San Raphael High School, Miami, Florida. March 2008, Doorways, a series of 5 black-and-white photographs. Position: photographer. "Second Prize Winner" in the Des Moines Sunday Journal photo contest. February 2007, Cellomorphosis, short story. Position: writer. A variation on the novella by Franz Kafka; published in Writing, vol. IV, 2007, at Amherst College, Amherst, Massachusetts. Do not worry too much about your portfolio.You don't need to have won awards to get into film school. I had won zero awards for my artwork. Your portfolio just needs to show that you have an interest in art.This could include acting, art projects (for fun or for school), and music you’ve written or performed (e.g., at a school talent show). Really, anything artistic can and should be included. Just make sure you don't include any profane or inappropriate artwork.I know this should go without saying, but in one of the applications I read at USC, thestudent had mentioned something inappropriate on hisportfolio list. So I want to make sure you don’t do this, too! Hishigh school art teacher had put an end to the project, but he'd still decided to mention it in his application. If your teacher does or did not approve of a project, it is very likely an admissions committee won’t either! Completing Your Film School Application Now that we've covered what materials you need to apply to film school, I want to give you a few pointers on completing your application. This often leads to conflicts and division between people and cause predjudice. People experience predjudice and discrimination for many different reasons some of which may include, sexualtiy, gender, race, disability, religion, background, age, appearance etc. Discrimination and predjuice ,may have significant harmful effects on an individual or friends and family, or even the wider society. For example children who are a victim of discrimination and pedjudice there is danger of damaging their self esteem/ confidence. They arent given the same advantages as other indiviuals and therefore dont the equal opportunities to reach their full potential. They are more likely to not progress and as a result of a lower sekf esteem their motivation to learn is damaged. Children could be excluded from certain roles. This can mean that they are unable to deveop their talent and abilities further which in turn would mean they are not able to make a full contribution to society further on in life. Children who may inflict discrimination to others risk causing themselves harm. For example discrimination and predjudice lead to them making wrongful assumptions of other individuals, this gives them the view that some people are worth less than others, this leads to them having a false view of the world we live in. Working towards inclusion means that we are working to break down the barriers of discrimination and ensuring all children and families fell that they are a part of the setting. This means that we are effectively taking steps in promoting a positive attitude towards diversity and creating equal opportunities for all individuals no matter what. By using inclusive practice we are creating a positive environment ensuring that all children have the chance to progress and achieve further. Although laws and leagal requirements cannot change prejudice attitudes and discrimination altogether, it is essential in helping to reduce it. Policies and legal framework give setting support and guidence that is practical and useful. There are several pieces of legislation that are relevant within our setting in terms on providing an inclusive work practice. The disability discrimination act 1995 protects the rights of individuals with disabilities. It outlines a duty for schools to aim to eliminate barriers ensuring everbody is able to have equal access to services. In the disability discrimination act 2005 places a duty for schools to complete a disibility equaltiy scheme and an access plan. As a school we must encourage eveyone to participate in all areas of school life, helping to eliminate discrimination. The special educational needs and disability act 2001 made it un lawful for educational providers to discriminate against individuals that have special educational needs or disabilities. The Children Act 1989 Sets out the duty of local authorities including schools, to provide services according to the needs of the individual child and ensure ,heir safety and welfare. As part of the childrens act 2004 it sets out a duty for us to provide effective accessible services to all children underpinning the five main outcomes for EVERY CHILD MATTERS. The equality Act 2010 outlines legal responsibilities of setting such as schools to provide equality of opportunity for all. Within my own setting and work role I find these peieces of legislation relevant. Within our setting we provide opportunitys for children and families of various race , background, gender disabilities etc. In our eyes every member of our team is valued and included. This extending from pupils to families and staff etc. For example children that may have special educational needs or disabilities we aim to provide effective care and support to suit the individual needs. Where possible extra support is provided. In my own role as a practioner I must remember that no matter how different children are from oneanother they are treated the same and given equal opportunitie to progress and achieve further. It is very important that we communicate in a way that shows we value and respect children and their families no matter how different they may be from that of our own. Although some people may think the use of carefully chosen words and language as politicly correct. It is important not to be detered as we should be carefull and think about the way we speak /talk to others, especially when in a position where we interact with families on a daily basis. The words and language we use along with how we express ourselves can have a significant effect on attitudes and values we develop. It can help the way we think of others. It could help us to think constructively when talking to other in future and treat people more respectfully. By showing respect and valuing others beliefs, culture etc we will in turn earn it for ourselves. UNIT 053AMANDA FAY OUTCOME 3. 3 HOW TO CHALLENGE DISCRIMINATION IN A WAY THAT PROMOTES CHANGE. As we know discrimination works against promoting and supporting a childs development and their progression. When we are faced with situations of discrimination it is important they are challenged. It is not only children that express predjudice or discriminate. It is good to have strategies in place should this arise. Supporting anybody that is being discriminated against is essential, but also helping the person who is behaving discriminatory trying to change their behaviour. Strategies need to be thought out carefully so not to antagonise the situation further. EXAMPLE If I was faced with a situation where another child was behaving discriminatory toward another by calling them names such as four eyes to a child wearing glasses, I would respond by firstly intervening. I would explain to the child(A) instigating the comments that what the have said is hurtful and un-kind. I would point out that it is unacceptable behaviour. I would ensure I was at the child(A) level to ensure they were understanding and paying attention to me. I would also help the child(A) learn from the situation by helping them to understand the consequences of their actions e. g â€Å"how would you fell if somebody said that to you? † allowing the child(A) to think of it from the other child(B) perspective. I would be careful not to make the child(A) feel disliked by me, â€Å" I like child(A), I dont like it when somebody is un kind. † Should situations like this arise again I would gain support from the class teacher. Possibly even touching on the subject of everybody being different within lesson plans. This allowing children to learn about diffent people, backgrounds, genders, appearance etc. Also teaching them how to be kind and helpful to one another.

I think that, while the boys experience immense bad luck due to the author, the story still proves its point. It is still possible though, that the bad luck of the boys could have been experienced in real life. I think that without this bad luck, the point of the story wouldn’t be as great, because without the restraint’s Golding placed on the boys, life on the island would have been too easy for the boys. The major constraint that Golding puts on the boys is the personality clash between Jack and Ralph. From the beginning, when Ralph is elected leader, Jack hates Ralph, and towards the end of the book, the feeling becomes mutual. Without Jack and Ralph’s problems, life would have been easy, and the ‘darkness of man’s heart’ would not have been conveyed to the reader. Jack shows ‘the darkness’ and if he and Ralph had just been friends, there would never have been an opportunity for Jack to show this darkness which lurked beneath the surface. Golding also uses the dead pilot conveniently against the boys - the way in which he is caught in the trees just in the right position to be caught by the wind and look like the beast and the way the wind picks up after Simon has let him down from the trees and carries him out to sea, so that the other boys cannot see that it wasn’t a beast. The author uses the boy’s fear against them, and although this could possibly happen in the situation, Golding uses it as a weapon against them, their morale and their companionship. I think that the boys split up and go to Jack because of the fear - he can kill the beast, he can get them meat, and if they ever get upset, he can start a dance and all will be fine.
